Mobile Anti-virus Apps - Do we need them?

Hello folks, in this post we will take a look at what an anti-virus app offer and how we can protect our phone without such apps.

In recent years increasing smartphone user-base face many security issues about their device. For protection of data in our smartphones and overall security of device we usually come across anti-virus applications available in market or Play Store. But using such apps is absolutely necessary? Can we protect our phones without spending money on such apps? Lets find out.

Virus is a some kind of malicious software that replicates itself, installs unnecessary or harmful applications and attack personal data. This is completely true about PCs, but for more widely used android operating system, virus don't replicate itself. Generally malwares in smartphones, scare user to install unnecessary apps, throw ads on screen, imitate generally used apps or web pages to steal your bank credentials.

For protecting our phone from such malwares/viruses, we find many applications on Play Store or in offline stores, some Sellers offer antivirus apps as free for 1 year or something like that. Many companies working in software security domain publish reports about malwares and how it is affecting potential smartphone users with that they don't forget to advertise about their software suit available that they claim to protect from such attacks.

Main source of malware in android is from .apk files and play store. As play store has tons of applications being uploaded daily, many of them are copy of some popular app. They contain harmful codes that do all the bad things in your phone. Any harmful code can be easily added to apk file of popular app, and once user installs such apk file, he becomes victim of attack.

Also there is another method that uses instant messaging apps to exploit user data, that is through messages that say, 'some company is giving free things please claim yours at this link'. When we click at such link, some apps may get installed without our knowledge. Such links look like authentic ones but there is some change in characters or spelling.

What anti-virus app does is, it scans all apps, scans internal storage for '.apk' files, monitors web traffic, alerts when any problem with storage and so on. All apps available are not give same features and not are up to date with malware definition updates.

With virus protection they offer tons of other features, such as, easy data backup, cache cleaner, battery optimizer, torch shortcut, traffic indicators, anti-theft etc. But they give such features at cost of, increase in battery drain, extra load on CPU to process data and overall reducing performance of your smartphone. These apps offer many other extra features because there is not much to offer in virus related for android.

Play Protect By Google
Permissions for apps
Android itself has the security features which are enough for it to protect itself from malicious applications. Google play protect is present in Play Store for scanning harmful apps, security features that prevent installing apps from unknown sources, hiding passwords, encrypting phone, access management and app permissions. So, we need not to waste our hard earned money on anti-virus apps. Also get rid of all cleaner and battery booster apps which cause unnecessary overhead with hardly any benefit.

With some simple precautions and common sense while installing or using any app could help us to be safe form any type of malware.
  • Install apps form play store or fully trusted app source.
  • While installing any app, quickly check the permissions required by app (such as, why a simple browser app need permission for access camera, phone and read SMS?)
  • Avoid installing .APK files for popular applications.
  • Turn off 'install from unknown sources' button.
  • Do not tap on ads while downloading any content.
  • Turn on Play Protect option present in play store.
  • Install all security or UI updates provided by manufacturer of phone.
  • Update apps regularly from play store.
  • Stay away from unnecessary apps that consume resources for your phone.
So, follow this simple tips and be smart & safe wile using using your smartphone!

Meltdown and Spectre : Backdoors in Modern Processor

In recent days, the technological world is roaming around two words "Meltdown" and "Spectre". They are not merely just simple words but are the vulnerabilities found in modern processors that run our computers, laptops, smartphones, wearables and many modern gadgets. These vulnerabilities allow programs to steal data, which is currently processed CPU(the heart of processor). Generally the memory used by processor is very secure and only kernel in operating system (main program that executes all the instructions) can access or modify this memory. No user program or software can access the memory directly. So the data remains secure while the CPU is processing it. This secure data can be saved passwords, encryption keys and critical documents. The devices that use processors can be affected by this kind of attacks! This means every smart device connected to any kind of network!  Meltdown and Spectre work on computers, Mobiles and Cloud. The matter of concern is tha...
